Choosing Locations for Engagement Photos

Engagement locations with meaning

Your choice of an engagement photo location may have special meaning to you. It may be a place you met or express an activity you share.

Add meaning to your engagement photos with these ideas for choosing possible locations.

I love to be there for a bride and groom throughout their entire engagement—not just when they say I do. That’s why I enjoy taking engagement photos. When I photograph a couple’s engagement, I get to know them, what they like, and how they interact. This makes for an even more enjoyable and comfortable experience when photographing their wedding.

One decision you’ll need to make when planning your engagement photos is where you’d like to take them. While I’m happy to offer suggestions, I enjoy when couples choose locations that are close to their hearts. Selecting a special location can help create more meaningful photographs.

Here are questions to get you thinking about possible locations for your engagement photos:

  • Where did you meet?
  • Where did you share your first kiss?
  • Where was your first date?
  • Where were you the first time you said, “I love you”?
  • What are your hobbies?
  • What do you like to do together on Saturday mornings? Even farmers’ markets and coffee shops can make great locations.

    Have fun

Wherever you decide to do your engagement photos, have fun. Be goofy. Laugh. This will make the memory special to both of you.

  • Where are you getting married? It could be fun to take your engagement photos the same place you plan to tie the knot. If you’re eloping, you could take photos that hint at your wedding locale.
  • What kind of couple are you? If you’d describe yourself as outdoorsy, let’s go to Walnut Woods State Park. Or if the city is your scene, let’s visit the Pappajohn Sculpture Park. And if you’re a private couple, you might be more comfortable taking photos where there will be fewer people.
