Just a little bit nervous?
Location: Iowa State Capitol Building, Principal Riverwalk
Photographer’s Notes: The Iowa Capitol grounds offered a variety of settings for Christine and Matt’s June engagement snapshot, but the fun didn’t stop there. We used the beautiful arches down by the Des Moines River for a more romantic scene. And thanks to sheer luck, a train passed by as we were leaving creating another unique backdrop.
One of the most valuable pieces of advice I can offer to couples is this: Be truly present on your wedding day and have fun with it. If you take it too seriously, you’ll end up stressed and disappointed — which is not a good way to remember your big day. Clients Melissa and Darryl understood this perfectly.
I remember meeting Darryl at a bridal show. He walked by my booth and I reached out to talk with him. I found out that he was excited about the wedding process and wanted to have an active part in the planning, so he had come by himself to the bridal show to check out the vendors. He was delighted that I reached out to him because many vendors seemed to ignore him, choosing only to focus on the brides attending the show. From our brief conversation, I was excited to be a part of their wedding.
Melissa and Darryl were married in 2014 under the trellis at Summerset Winery. A friend of theirs kicked off the festivities by performing an interpretive dance while guests were being seated. The rabbi — who was also father of the bride — kept the day lighthearted by sprinkling bits of humor in conversations before and after the ceremony. It was truly an emotional experience to watch as he officiated their wedding ceremony.
Once the vows and rings were exchanged, the couple’s fun-loving spirit came out in full force. The groom and his groomsmen took off their jackets and unbuttoned their dress shirts to reveal t-shirts with a variety of superhero symbols. The bride even got in on the fun with her new “super husband.” (And of course, I helped the photos a bit to set the scene).
Then came the reception. The women had been practicing their wedding party entrance the previous evening to make sure they one-upped the men. A little wedding party rivalry always makes the day more entertaining.
The rest of the night was enjoyable, also. A friend of theirs sang throughout the evening, adding a special touch to their first dance. Melissa and Darryl, as well as their friends and family, thoroughly enjoyed their day as their wedding photos showcase. Truly, a day to enjoy!
